The Design

Designed by Kate Maddison for the Yorkshire Festival 2014, which included the first two stages of the Tour de France, the structure is inspired by the Harrogate Pump Room evoking the health giving properties of spa water and cold bathing. The angled mirror reflects the sky to create the illusion of ‘A doorway to another world’. It was displayed at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Tatton Show in July and is now on loan at Burton Manor Gardens.

About Follies

Follies are a peculiarly British artistic and architectural garden phenomenon created for pleasure and this example, relevant to Edwardian Harrogate, echoes Thomas Mawson’s garden at Burton of the same era.
